More Info

Nik Turner is best remembered as a co-founding member of HAWKWIND and INNER CITY UNIT, and his own Nik Turner’s Space Ritual, as well as guesting with many bands and artists over the years, including Robert Calvert, Mother Gong, The Stranglers, Sham 69, Sting, The Sensible Gray Cells, The Astronauts and our own Paradise 9 to name a few.

It was with Hawkwind that he wrote the iconic hits Master of the Universe and Brainstorm. Following his stint with Hawkwind, he went on to form Inner City Unit in 1979 with original Real Music Club founder Judge Trev Thoms.  Nik, known affectionately as Uncle Nik by so many, was a great inspiration. At festivals he would play around the sites and jump up with many upcoming bands who asked him to guest.

When our own Judge Trev was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010, he readily agreed to play a special 60th birthday party gig in Trev’s honour, where a Nik Turner Band was created for the night. Sadly Trev passed away in December 2010. Nik generously returned every year to play our annual memorial gig to Trev. It seems only fitting to celebrate Nik’s charismatic and colourful life, while we also remember Judge Trev and Slim Tim Slide, both founder members of the RMC.

The Nik Turner Tribute Band

The last time Nik played in this line up at the RMC was in 2019. Sadly, Dino Ferari can’t make this gig so Paradise 9 drummer Wayne Collyer will be taking the sticks. We also welcome back ICU Nazar Ali Khan on bass, Martin Litmus on lead guitar, along with Gregg McKella, Kev Ellis, Richard Lanchester, and Monty Oxymoron.  The band will be playing the ThunderRider’s classics.

* Sadly due to unforeseen circumstances Jaki Windmill is unable to perform at this. However, her guests, Ron Tree, and Nick May, will still be playing solo sets. We hope to have Jaki back at the RMC again soon.

Ron Tree

Ron Tree was frontman and bassist for Hawkwind from 1995 to 2002. He also formed with Judge Trev, MOAB (Mother of all Bands), Steve Took's Horns, Sewer Suckers, 2000DS and also was in the reformed Hawklords, to name a few.

Nick May

RMC regular Nick May is guitarist extraordinaire with Dubbal and previously of The Enid and Whimwise.

The Judge Trev Band

This year we have Martin Litmus, Wayne Collyer, Richard Lanchester, and of course Gregg McKella and Kev Ellis playing songs from Judge Trev’s God and Man album.

Honkin’ Stu

Opening the night, we welcome back Honkin’ Stu McKay, fittingly a co-founder of the Real Music Club with Trev & Tim. Stu will be opening with a set of blues harp.  Honkin’ Stu’s band The Southern SlamDoor Band was created especially for the RMC’s memorial gig last year to our own late and much missed Slim Tim Slide Rundall. It is heartening to see that the band has continued after the gig to have become one of Brighton’s premier blues bands. Sadly, they could not make it this year, but Stu has kindly offered to open.

Proceeds to BHCR (Brighton & Hove Community Radio) and to PANCREATIC CANCER UK (Registered Charity No. 1112708)
